Vancouver Mural Fest

In 2021 I created a mural for VMF!
For this piece, my prompt was the idea of belonging. My mind went to many different avenues of what that looked like to me. When I thought of where I wanted to pull inspiration from, I thought of the loftiness of the romantic and renaissance period. Black subjects are foreign in that context and I want to show that Black subjects deserve to be idealized. We are ethereal, we are godly, we are soft, we are angelic. We belong to ourselves and to our divine calling. On the way towards truth, brightness, and enlightenment.

BSRP was Vancouver Mural Fest's community effort to reconcile the erasure, and systemic racism by the removal of the historic Black neighborhood, Hogan’s Alley. By creating street art and murals, we are hoping to reclaim our visibility as Black people within the cultural tapestry of Vancouver, on this unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
We are here and we have always been here!
